Bharthiyaar – தூண்டிற் புழுவினை போல்o

Bharathiyaar was a great nationalist, philosopher and a social  reformer far ahead of his times. What most people miss out is that he excelled in romantic poems. Kannan Paattu contains some of his best compositions. In this collection of poems the poet visualizes Kannan or Krishna in many forms; his king, his guru, his servant, father, mother, sweetheart and lover. Despite the different manifestations of his Kannan, it is his songs on Kannan as the divine lover  that stand out.

This poem talks of the intense longing for Kannan , that Kannamma goes through , followed by a description of the absolute bliss she attains on experiencing His presence .

A short distraction ;

Thirvalluvar also has devoted a complete chapter on this kind of suffering .

116. பிரிவாற்றாமை

one of the most insightful couplets, I found  in the chapter:-

துறைவன் துறந்தமை தூற்றாகொல் முன்கை
இறையிறவா நின்ற வளை.

The bangles fall off her arms giving away how thin she had become

These are times when not many read poetry but everybody listens to music particularly when there are fancy visuals that go with the lyrics. The background music often  drowns the lyrics and most people don’t miss the lyrics anyway.

As an old fashioned Bharathi bhakt, first, I would  love to read the poem in full , unedited and unaffected by any sound or visuals. So, here’s the full version, all fifty six lines set in seven stanzas.

In 1948, the song was first popularized by AVM productions through the golden voice of  DK Pattammal in the film Vethala Ulagam. Eldest of the Travancore sisters, Lalitha dances to this song. The song is full of similes, a delight to any Bharathanatyam dancer. As always , a film can popularize a song but can never  do full justice to the genius of Bharathiyaar.

Generally Bharathiyaar bhakti runs through generations and there is a recording of DK Pattammal singing  many Bharathi songs along her grand daughter Nithyasree Mahadevan.

Obviously, the poet did not write for films where any song has to fit into a pallavi, anu pallavi and 2-3 charanams.  I feel Bhartahiyaar’s  songs should  be listened to , in full, with minimum accompaniments  even if it takes half an hour, so that one can soak in every word and every line and be immersed in bliss with  the after glow  lasting  for an hour or so .

The first half of the poem talks of the girl suffering the pangs of separation and longing.  There is a series of similes to describe her suffering ; heart trembling like a worm in an angler’s hook or a flame exposed to winds. It goes on and on  to the the agony of sleeplessness and lack of appetite. Everything that was supposed to taste great tastes so bitter and nothing at all interests her in life;  she cannot even tolerate simple joyful activities, leave alone, enjoy. She cannot bear the company of her friends or her mother trying to cheer her up. The doctors and astrologers, to whom one goes  in such times , have also given up all hopes.

When she  had become a complete physical and mental wreck and when everyone had given up all hopes of any redemption, something wonderful happens. She, in her dream, goes through a kind of experience that leaves her absolutely ecstatic.

On waking up, the world around her becomes extremely beautiful again. She is trying to figure out what had caused this  total transformation. She is musing  aloud “Who was that in my dreams who touched my heart? Every time I think of his presence, and I feel a strange sense of peace pervading through my entire being ?”

Thanks to the internet and the audio /video editing software; I have a short clip of a line rendered in the soulful voice of Bombay Jayashree.

It’s so soothing  whenever  I listen to .

The word than or Thanmai in Tamil  used to mean cool and probably even the hindusthani word Thand has originated from our Than. Today we have lost a cool word to chill about as a youngster would say today.

In the last stanza, as she keeps reliving her blissful experience , mulling on it over and over ,  it finally dawns on her that it was indeed Krishna who had appeared in her dream!

Here are some video clips not in any order

The singers : Bombay Jayashri, S Sowmya, DK Pattammmal and Nithyasree Mahadevan

Bharathiyaar – பாயும் ஒளி நீ எனக்கு

Continued from   Here

Another beautiful poem on Kannamma by Bharathiyaar. Here he describes the relationship between Kannan and Kannamma.

We are living in the times of gender equality , that is not just restricted to male and female but a whole range of genders !

Equality is a  western concept . It is a relatively modern idea that did not find a place even in Plato’s Republic, that held sway till the period of French revolution.  In the face of it , the idea of equality looks like a ‘self evident truth ‘as in the American Declaration of Independence. Even this article of declaration mentioned only men; probably the equality of all humans was not self-evident then.  Whatever be,   now, equality seem to include all humans , though not extended to other beings as yet.

Fair play, justice and harmonious living are desirable virtues in any society. But is equality really required ? Has there been any society that has ever achieved equality among it’s members?  We are not created equals , if the word created may be used, in physical or mental abilities or in temperament and  the differences are nowhere  more pronounced than in the genders.

This poem of Bharthiyaar describes a beautiful, harmonious, symbiotic relationship between Kannan and Kannamma. This is one of the songs where the poet addresses Kannamma in the compilation of poems under “Kannan Paattu)

http://www.lyricaldelights.com/  gives the lyrics in  Tamil  ; transliteration in roman letters for people who speak but can’t read Tamil and then translation to English for the others; click.

As always , it is only a few verses of a few songs that become popular, may be because of the singabilility , or that a renowned singer chose to sing those verses or simply because of political correctness of that period. It’s always a great insight to go through the entire song or whatever verses are left to us today, for much of Bharathiyaar’s writings were published after his time.

for the complete poem click.

Bharathi wrote for the masses; it is said he used to read his works to people, closely observing their reactions. If he felt that his audience is finding a word a little difficult to understand he re-wrote to make it simpler. Quite a contrast to some people who deliberately include rarely used words to sound scholarly and in the process end up making their  work totally incomprehensible.

In this song, the poet picks up such complementary attributes and objectives where one becomes meaningless without the other.  What is the point of   eyesight without  light and What is a song without a melodious tune to go with ?! What is a flower without fragrance?

Certain idioms are peculiar to Indian way of thinking . We always associate flowers with fragrance ,but in the West, they grow flowers that hardly have any fragrance. Even the rose by any name that smells as sweet, smells sweeter in our country. To fully appreciate the poet you need to think desi.

Bharathiyaar was not a saint and he wrote about every goal of Hindu life;  Dharma (Righteousness, moral values) Artha (Wealth, economic values)  , Kaama (pleasure, love, psychological values) and  moksha (liberation, spiritual values) .

In this poem too he touches every aspect.  He likens himself to security or ‘nest egg’ when he likens Kannamma to Wealth. While the first two lines of a verse describes the complementary attributes ,the last line of each stanza personifies Kannamma as Divine Music, Intoxication ,Pure Bliss and so on.

The song has been picturised in a few Tamil films and seeing these one may feel that it’s the patriarchal way of glorifying womanhood and yet relegating her to cooking, washing or child care. But any one who has read his poems on emancipation of women would understand that the great poet was far ahead of his times to keep women away from any profession.

In a modern society , men and women, all face different challenges at different points in our journey.  And with those challenges will come the need to play a different role.

Bharthiyaar’s message on  two individuals complementing each other’s role may be taken as  to include changing of roles as required and yet celebrate cooperation rather than competition.

A quote by American poet , Edwin Markham comes to mind

For all your days be prepared, and meet them ever alike. When you are the anvil, bear—when you are the hammer, strike.

Here are some video clips of the song (some popular stanzas from the song)

I personally like the one by Indian Raga for the seamless switch from classical mode to folk mode , that shows the universal appeal these verses had on the learned as well as the masses.

Dissent , Transparency and Democracy

Two greatest democracies are going through very difficult times. No form of government can be  perfect as any Government, after all, has to be manned by us , the imperfect humans. Corollary is that any form of government would be perfect if human beings who implement the system become perfect.

[read_more id=”1″ more=”Read more” less=”Read less”]

I feel under the circumstances Democracy is the least dangerous of the political systems. These days, about democracy,  there is much talk of dissent and the fundamental right to dissent. Dissent in a democracy is taken by some people as dissent is democracy.

This idea has been taken to extremes during the Anti CAA protests when public property was destroyed with impunity in the name of dissent. Express your dissent by all means , but you cannot browbeat a government, or the silent majority  into changing the policies as  at least 60 % of people would be supporting its policies even if 10% are out in the streets burning buses and trains, considering that 30% may be totally indifferent. The exact percentages may vary but the fact is that majority of people are not against CAA and that does mean something .

After the right to dissent, the next issue is demand for transparency .  We have a whole lot of arm chair journalists clamouring for truth and absolute truth. Very commendable indeed. But can military operations be planned and  conducted in full view of the public ? Isn’t there something called Official Secret Act ,even in a democracy?

We had Senior Air Force Officers explaining to the Supreme Court as why we needed Rafales. What was highlighted was fighters of 3.5 generation and 5th generation as if it was some mobile phones being purchased. Of course there were terms like  niche stealth technology and the electronic warfare capabilities, but these nuances were totally lost on the public including our truth seeking journalists.  Having a weapon system with a longer range for target acquisition and engagement is the difference between hitting and being hit  for a fighter aircraft . Even on such issues , we had a chorus from the masses organized by our opposition and the ‘liberals’ to show dissent on the streets.

What a great combination of ignorance and arrogance !

Another new trend is witnessed in both US and India. All political parties fought the  elections with no holds barred attitude. When the results were out, the liberals in both countries went about whining “Not my President” or Not my PM” . Remember , it is rejection of a govt legally  elected ,in accordance with the Constitution.

We are a country divided on multifarious axes, rural/urban, north /south  , hindi/ non hindi and most glaringly traditional Hindus and the western looking liberals.  Every single divide is finding expression in the dissent against the elected govt, whatever be the issue at hand.

That, in my opinion is definitely not dissent in a democracy but total rejection of Democracy.

How to create a bootable Multi – OS USB Drive.

How to create a bootable USB stick with multiple OS

The good news is that once you have a bootable USB Stick, anybody will be able to use it without risking her/his  computer , but  the process of making the bootable disk itself is fraught with mine fields for the uninitiated.

STATUTORY WARNING

BEFORE YOU START TRYING OUT THE STEPS , PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT CREATING A BOOTABLE DISK REQUIRES BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF PARTITIONS IN A HARD DISK AND THE BOOT PROCESS ITSELF. BACK UP ALL DATA BEFORE STARTING . THE PROCESS IF ATTEMPTED WITHOUT A BASIC UNDERSTANDING CAN RESULT IN THE SYSTEM NOT BOOTING AT ALL OR EVEN HARD DISK GETTING WIPED OUT.

We know many things can go wrong with a computer, but unlike dumb machines , say a lawn mower, a computer has an extraordinary capability to do self-diagnosis . But to initiate that process the system has to boot itself .

So, assuming that the motherboard processor and RAM are okay, a system should be able to run from an optical drive or a USB drive . As a matter of fact the first computer I used was designed to be booted only through a floppy and there was no hard disk!

The idea is to make a bootable usb drive for the purpose of repairing a bootloader , do a back up of the hard disk or simply to do some productive work on the computer. A search on the web would point to a number of applications like YUMI and  unetbootin. I would stick to multi-boot usb .

MultiBootUSB is a cross platform software written in python which allows you to install multiple live linux on a USB disk non destructively and option to uninstall distros.

Visit the official site

This is an advanced cross platform application that is installable in Linux or Windows. So, how do we go about it ?

Step 1 : Download the ISO image

Download the ISO image of the Operating System of your choice. For Microsoft products you’ll have to visit this site . There would be copyright issues and  requirement for activation key . The real fun would be in exploring the options available in the universe of Open Source Software.

Since  troubleshooting is the most likely purpose  , Boot-repair disc would be a great place to start with .

https://sourceforge.net/projects/boot-repair-cd/

Though it is an avatar of ubuntu, it can be a great boon to windows users as well. The interface is intuitive and graphical and there would be absolutely no need for any command line job.

Step 2.  Install Multiboot usb application

It is simple enough . Just follow this guide .

Step 3. Create a USB boot disk

      • Plug in a blank USB with a capacity of 8GB or above formatted in 32 FAT file system
      • Run Multibootusb program

Step 4 : Install Preferred  OS

Select the USB drive . MS calls it G: or H: drive while linux calls it sdb1 or sdb2 etc

Select your the ISO image you have downloaded in step 1

Click on install distro after selecting the usb drive and the iso image.

You will be prompted to confirm that you would like to proceed with the installation

Click yes and your bootable  USB disk will be ready in minutes.

This process may be repeated with additional ISO images to install any number of operating systems as long as there is space in the USB drive.

Step 5 : Reboot and bot through your USB Drive

Reboot the computer and choose usb drive as the first  device in the booting sequence.

It can be done in two ways ..

      • Going to bootmenu  . for Dell it is press F12 at the time of booting                For other makes check out
      • Going to setup bios by pressing F2 aat the time of booting and changing the boot order

Once you manage to select usb drive as the preferred boot device you will get a boot menu as under

Select boot repair disk or any other operating system you want to boot from and that’s it. Your are done. you will be greeted by the screen below:-

Attaining Software Nirwana

Porteus OS running off a USB Stick

A few days back I was lamenting about the demise of Desktop and Laptop computers in personal space. But despite the dominance of tablets and smart phones there are still some die-hard users of personal computers . For someone who spends a lot of time on her personal computer (not the one issued by the employer for office work), there is always the lurking fear of losing data and more importantly the fear of losing the kind of settings and configuration achieved over years.

When a computer boots smoothly and when every application is working in harmony with no conflict or friction it is sheer poetry or a ballet dance. There are no warnings, error messages  or undue delay ; it is just harmony and grace that you experience with every click . Even an anti virus shield , ostensibly to protect your computer can be a big nuisance, impinging on the processing power and memory , slowing down the whole system. The full power of all resources should be used for productive effort and not for  monitoring your own applications or files for  viruses or doing for-ever searches for some non-existent malware.

Whatever you need to do should be available at a right click; be it resizing an image, playing some music, convert to a different format  or printing  a booklet in the size you want. These tasks should not require a huge overhead but should be done with minimum system resources, in the background. Mostly such configurations are achieved through customized scripts .

Over years you end up with a customized system that you fall in love with. You simply don’t want to use any other system. Yet nothing is permanent. Gautama Buddha said  Change or impermanence is the essential characteristic of all phenomenal existence. So is it with your computer system. Bad things happen to good computers. Hard disks can crash for no fault of yours. There are times an user commits a digital harakiri by wiping off his own critical data or even a whole disk in the process of regular maintenance.

That’s when one longs for  software nirwana. You can have a back up and back up to back up, on your hard disk, in the cloud and so on. That is ok for the data; for your audio, video and graphic files, but what about those wonderful themes you have set for your applications, the settings, configurations, passwords, aliases and scripts ? What about those rare third part applications you have collected over years ?

Boot-repair to your rescue

It would be good if you can have a portable device to save all settings too. You should have a portable device with which you can boot into any old computer, Linux, Mac or even Windows; 32 bit or 64 bit Architecture ; and turn that computer into your own ,only  for the period that you want to use it. On shutdown it is restored to its old ugly self ! This device along with another device, may be to store your data would get you to the ultimate Software Nirwana.

After a lot of research followed by trial and error  I created a multiboot USB drive with four different operating systems. Porteus is one of the fastest, lightest OSs while Bodhi Linux is a complete light weight Installation for software nirwana  and it is aptly named “Bodhi Linux”. Boot-repair Disc, yes, you guessed it right; repairs the booting system!

That’s 2016 Bodhi Linux livening up a 2008 vintage Lenova Laptop

Bodhi Linux with Moksha Desktop and Swami Panel can  give you the Ultimate Software Nirvana.

In the next post , I’ll attempt an How-to on creating a multi-OS boot USB Stick.

Cheers !

Dealing with Information Overload

I do not think there is any dispute on the issue that we are facing acute information overload. Far from the days of waiting for the morning newspapers or the nine o’ clock news we have reached the stage when there is a continuous stream of information bombarding us 24 x 7 with nuggets of news and views real or fake. News does not mean a report of events but all kinds of theories and counter theories disseminated through social media and Web channels and TV channels.

The sad part is that most of this “information “ is not of our choosing , and nor do these inputs leave one unaffected. If we do not control what kind of information we consume, some one else is going to do it for us and surely they are not going to keep our well being and interests in mind.

I can hear that “I am too smart to be fooled by some propaganda” . Earlier only Advertisers specialized in perception management; today everybody does. Perceptions are sold scientifically and cleverly. A 30 seconds message telecast / web-cast or spun around through social media ,around the clock for a week can be so effective without anyone getting any wiser. An automioble company names a model Esteem and a little girl talking of the big car of her daddy makes any daddy associate self-esteem with a big car.

There are very credible news channels which have moved ever so subtly from center to far left , one starts seeing “center” on one extreme. It’s happening in India ; it’s happening around the world.

So what’s the solution ? Do we really stay away from TV Channels and Social media to fall back on the State Controlled media channels? Not really . The Net has some really rich sources that can be customized to suit your interests . Today, one can pick and choose as to what kind of information he wants and in what form. That is where RSS comes in . For the not so tech savvy, RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary.

Every news or information source has its own RSS link for providing a dynamic feed to it’s subscribers . This kind of information flow is not restricted just news or the main stream subjects, but can be very specific in line with a unique interest of a person. If I want to keep track of any writing or event associated with the great poet Subramanya Bharathi, well I can find a half dozen sources dealing with just that.

Should we use technology to follow the kind of information that gives us that inner happiness or should we drift aimlessly letting our minds be poisoned by the stuff forced on us. I do not mean it’s all bad, but one has heard often enough that one man’s meat is another man’s poison, to understand every human being is different and thrives on different kind of intellectual nourishment.

The idea of RSS is not something new but as old as the interent. I remember accessing a newsgroup long before M$ Windows came into being. It is these news groups that have morphed into News-feed applications. There are a number of apps for mobiles as well as for the web to collect and feed information for you. Rather than recommend specific apps ,keeping with the spirit of anti-spamming I would point to a link that gives a wide choice of apps   and choice of feeds.

Happy info gathering !

Cheers !

Why are personal laptops no more personal !

Today, it is the combination of android and whatsapp that is holding sway on the way we go about consuming infotainment contents. How often do we hear this “It’s nice but how do I share it on whatsapp ?” Recently , I helped a freind extract an embedded video clip from an online magazine to facilitate sharing on whatsapp.

When I switch on my Linux Machine, I am greeted by four desktops on the status bar. In one I open a browser, on another a music player , a file manager , writer and spreadsheet on the third and probably a simple notepad on the fourth for coding purpose.

The activities generally fall into the categories of Work, info, entertainment, communication and utility. It is good to be switching between these desktops for Rest and Recoup. There is simply no need to look elsewhere or any other device . May be I am old fashioned; nothing much has changed over the years except that there is an android app on my phone for almost anything you can do on a laptop except stuff like video editing , web designing or coding.

The world has changed a lot in the last decade. Let’s see how most people use the various devices today. In India, Desktop Computer which was a kind of status symbol in the early nineties, a necessity at home around the beginning of the millennium is all but extinct , at least as homes are concerned.

The laptop PCs that replaced desktop PCs at homes have just become the portable avatars of Office computers. It is only the students who buy laptops and that is only because no school/college provides them with PCs for doing their projects .

Then there are the middle aged and the retirees, gen X,Y or whatever they are called, who are used to PCs at Work place (or may be who have been used by PCs!) .They do own personal laptops ; but do they ever switch them on ? They sure do, but only for the annual tasks like filing of income tax or may be monthly tasks like portfolio management.

So, at home, what do we have or what do we really use in place of desktops and laptops ? Obviously, it is the tablets and the ubiquitous smart phones. Steve Jobs declared in 2010 that we were entering the post PC era. Of course it could well have been a self-fulfilling prophecy. The Big boys in the industry can make things happen. Probably what he didn’t foresee was the phenomenal growth of Android. In India, it is not the iphones that displaced PCs but Android phones.

Today, it is the combination of android and whatsapp that is holding sway on the way we go about consuming infotainment contents. How often do we hear this “It’s nice but how do I share it on whatsapp ?” Recently , I helped a friend extract an embedded video clip from an online magazine to facilitate sharing on whatsapp.

How do we read news and articles ? From classic mail & news aggregators like MS Outlook or Netscape Mail (later Mozilla Thunderbird) that could handle RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds along with emails , we have moved on to Smart phone apps like In-shorts, Dailyhunt, Flip-board and so on. Be it BBC or Dainik Bhaskar, every Media House has its own smartphone apps. Yet, most people are served these stories through Whatsapp groups ; sensational stories, selectively forwarded and re-forwarded from group to group to be followed by likes, shares and the inevitable arguments.

So in a way all our infotainment needs are fulfilled (or controlled) by just one App ; ie Whatsapp, ably supported by Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

The world moves on . Computers , be it Desktop or Laptop, now strictly belong to the work space. Tablets and smart phones are for personal space. So if a company wants to sell something it has to be through smart phones app. If some one wants to be heard , he has to channelize his views through smartphone apps, specially whatsapp. The Web sites the virtual home of an organization or an individual need to be ever-conscious of how they appear in a hand held device.

These are some thoughts, that occurred while redesigning the blog site for our audience of present times!

Wonder where do we go from here!

Amaravian Web Site

Today, in the digital world we live in, every individual and every institution needs a digital identity . Amaravian Alumni Association has one of the best identities , our alumni website, amaravian.com. We have a comprehensive database and contact details of fellow-alumni are available literally on your fingertips . Just fire the app on your smart-phone and reach out to any amaravian anywhere in the world. From my own batch 90-95 % are registered.

The website Amarvian.com was launched in 2007 and has gradually built up an exhaustive database on over 5000 alumni , from the initial excel spreadsheet compiled by Capt Vijayasarathi over the years. Technically speaking, it is PHP based, lightweight , having simple user interface and an elegant design. It has withstood the test of time and has maintained the functionality over 13 years.

I know from my experience that it is easier to make a website than to get people to use it, particularly a non-commercial web site with little or no revenues. The simple functionality of emails and forum is amazing. I only wish more people use for routine communication.

We have a simple feature called “Forum” to meet the need for discussions that are stored as a thread. I say simple because it is all text based . I must say, less than 5 percent of our alumni access this part, yet, it is one place where important issues are discussed and the minutes of the discussions are always available for reference. For eg, doing some background research for a short article on functioning of our OBA, I could see the Principal’s letter spelling out the current line of thinking on the issue and the comments from alumni on that letter.

A sad necessity for any community is to keep track of the departed, particularly so for a mature institution . The web site has a feature where any member can make entries; firstly the factual details like date, cause of death and so on. Once the details along with photographs are displayed on the site, any member can pay verbal tributes as comments on the post. A simple way to remember those who have passed on.

Amaravian.com , like most web sites today, has a companion app for mobile devices which is really handy for quick reference on some contact details or photos.

As a technology buff, I have been following the trend closely from newsgroups in the nineties to emails groups and blogs, then social media platforms like Orkut, Facebook,WhatsApp, Instagram and so on. While WhatsApp is clearly the winner today as for usage is concerned, blogs score in durability of contents.

The team working behind the website , have done a wonderful job with selfless dedication , in design and maintenance of the facilty. But there is always a need for enhancements and on the top of my wish list is provision for a multipurpose blog.

For the benefit of people not fully initiated to the bloggers’ world , I include a short note on blogs. Blog is short for Web log , the process of logging into a web site and adding contents. A blog comprising videos is called a vlog, one comprising links is called a linklog, a site containing a portfolio of sketches is called a sketchblog or one comprising photos is called a photoblog. Blogs with shorter posts and mixed media types are called tumblelogs. One might put it as what is Test match to a T-20 match would be a Blog to Instagaram. A blog has all bells and whistles unlike a bland text message, but at the same time can give in depth gyan on any subject unlike an Instagram post.

There are wonderful open source CMS (Content management System) like WordPress that has made blogging a cake-walk even for the people not so technically savvy. WordPress was originally created as a blog-publishing system but has evolved to support other types of web content including more traditional mailing lists and forums, media galleries, membership sites and so on. I understand that Amaravian.com also is in the process of introducing a feature for blogging and we can soon look forward to a lot of creativity from the members.

A big Thanks to the team ; in the order of School Seniority , Vijayasarathy N(244), Seetharaman Ganesan (1625), T S Vijaya Kumar (1657), Sundaraeswar Babu (1677) , Mohammed Shaffiudeen (1707), Senthil Shankar (1756) , Damodararaj Kannan (2044) , Muruganandhan (2487) , S Anand Kumar (2968) and A R Sooriyaoli (RollNo: 4490).

Old Boys Association

Old Boy’s Association or simply OBA means different things to different people. I might also add “at different times”. Over a span of 50 years , perceptions change particularly when seen through the eyes of a student, an alumnus and as part of the school management.

In the year I joined , 1968, there were just four batches that had graduated from the school. The old boys were really boys and not old men as we see today. What was the purpose of OBA then ? For the alumni , it was a great way to keep in touch with their alma mater, particularly considering that in those days the only other way to keep in touch with anyone was through letters or snail mail as they are called now. It was good to meet your favorite teachers and give an update on your progress or seek guidance. For the teachers it is absolutely rewarding to see their wards standing on their own legs and to see them shining in various fields ; a moment of pride for any mentor.

As students , we really used to look up to our seniors as many of them were role models for us. I think, the school had a bias towards accommodating NDA cadets and OBA was scheduled keeping the academic session of NDA in mind. For most students ,at that age, NDA was always something awe inspiring . It took just four years for a boy passing out from the school to become a commissioned officer of the defense forces. Add another two years and he would have picked up the rank of captain, the same rank held by our School Headmaster ; and school Headmaster was a very big man, especially when seen from the perspective of a student.

It was not just the rank, there was a distinct change in the personality, that appealed to the young. To motivate a young boy to join the forces, it takes just one interaction with a boy who had been with you at school not many years back and has now evolved or risen to a position you hold in high esteem.

An alumni get together is also an occasion to have fun with your childhood mates , but that is something that can be organized anywhere , not necessarily at the school. Of late it is this aspect which has attained monstrous proportions.

In the earlier days , meaning in the seventies, an OBA meant a special assembly where alumni gave motivational talks , followed by a friendly game of basket ball or cricket and informal meals at the Boys Mess.

As a student, I particularly remember the OBA of 1974 , may be because we were the senior most batch then or may be because I happened to participate in the School Team vs Alumni Team cricket match. Whatever be, that’s the kind of get together I would cherish. There was a special assembly and a friendly Cricket match at what used to be Football Field No 4 , later called, Oval and now called “ xxxxx Stadium” .

We were in whites , prim and proper, for a leisurely game umpired by redoubtable duo ,Mr Venkateswaran and Mr Raghuraman. There was lighthearted banter and fun , less of competition and more of mutual appreciation. For the records, the school team won the match comfortably. Nambi got a bunch of wickets; Baburaj and I got a decent opening partnership going for the school team. I might add here that it was Baburaj who kept the score board moving while I just held on to one end. As I recall Senguttuvan kept the wickets for the Alumni and Flying officer Madheswaran , who went on to become an Air Marshall, was the main bowler.

That’s the way I like to remember an OBA; motivational talks , friendly games and simple regular meals at the Mess.

After that get together, the next one I attended was in 2004 , a good thirty years later. Everything had changed. Many of the alumni were accompanied by families, there were many cars moving about on the roads where we had seen only bicycles. The swimming pool was open to all and it looked more like an amusement park. The numbers were high and so were the alumni once it got dark.

I was attending an OBA meeting after a long time and had a lot to catch up on. Selvavinayagam and I , meeting after three decades, sat on the steps of our famous Pilliayar Koil and talked and talked. We talked about the school, ourselves and our families ; it was well past midnight when we broke off. Many of our alumni were still hanging around the mess complex , high but not dry.

I felt there was an attempt on the part of alumni to show off that they had arrived and that it was an occasion to celebrate. The music was loud and atmosphere boisterous. I cannot visualize what the then students thought of us. May be for the present lot of students , an alumnus driving a big car, and living it up was more of a role model than say someone who joined army or achieved academic excellence. Can’t say.

Subsequently we have had many fiery discussions on the Alumni Forum. While the younger lot was divided on the opinion, the older lot generally felt that it was a sober occasion and there was a definite need for restraint.

For me , the most important reason for alumni get together at the school will always be to motivate the younger lot to pursue the common values we always shared and will continue to share.
