India that is Bharat – Globalism Vs Nationalism

As I had mentioned earlier, reading J Sai Deepak has been a very pleasant surprise. There are many issues one is aware of and there are viewpoints one strongly believes in. Yet it is difficult to express them in speech or writing.  When you hear these views precisely  articulated by someone , well, you are caught ; hook , line and sinker.

I don’t claim what I write to be original at all. India That is Bharat is a difficult book to read. May be because it is written by a Mechanical Engineer turned Lawyer, some of the pages just read like equations in Integral Calculus.  But if you can understand  the functions and derivatives he talks about , you can see an unambiguous stream of logic analyzing and cutting through to separate the chaff from the grain smoothly and decisively.

I just pick some nuggets and try to express in a way a layman  would understand.

Let’s take Globalism vs Nationalism

I have heard this many times ;

” We are in an age of globalism . We are all global citizens , why should we be confined to a narrow vision of Nationalism. Nationalism can only lead to jingoism and  conflicts. There should be a border-less world”

Mostly , our Indian liberals talk on these lines only when proposing to settle Rohingyas all over the country , not when they themselves apply for a passport or a visa to US.

Some, who are more romantic about the idea, love quoting John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’. A beautiful number really; listen to that to take a break from serious stuff.

Imagine

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us, only sky
Imagine all the people
Livin’ for today
Ah
Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too
Imagine all the people
Livin’ life in peace
You
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
You
You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

(Note the Christian or Abrahamic way of thinking; casual dropping of heaven and hell for motivating people to be good in this life. There’s also the suggestion that killing and dying is for religion and country)
Great idea  !  Now lets come back to mother earth.
Let’s say you want a border-less world and you decide to leave your borders open. Does your neighbor too think on the same lines ? Not  very plausible. So, on the issue of your open border  he is most likely to say,
“Thine is mine but Mine is also mine!”
Soon there will be nothing left to defend . We had a PM with such Utopian ideas and 1962 Chinese aggression woke us up  rudely to the real world.
The real question is two-fold;
firstly, Is the rest of the world on the same page ? Has US opened it’s borders to all without passport or visa?
Secondly, Are your own countrymen reconciled to the idea of being on their own for governance of the State, to include security, justice, education , health care and infra structure?
This Pandemic has shown how liberal are the ‘liberals’ individually and as nations.
US and the West based pharma companies have actually made tonnes of money on global misery. Neither socialist countries nor capitalist countries would provide free vaccinations and medicines to poor countries, though dharmik countries might.
Till such time all economic migrations inter country or intra-country can be stopped, a border less world makes no sense. For that to happen all regions should be equally  developed. If Bihar is equally developed , where will Panjab get cheap labour from. If India is as rich as US, where will US get cheap IT labour from ?
It is more prudent to first work towards good life for all in the family, then society, then country before dreaming of being a global citizen. The only point to note is  that one should work in a dharmik way for betterment rather than through colonizing  or exploiting your neighboring region or the country.
जो घर का नहीं हो सकता , वह  समाज का नहीं हो सकता
जो समाज का नहीं हो सकता , वह  देश का नहीं हो सकता
जो देश का नहीं हो सकता , वह दुनिया का नहीं हो सकता

  1. Very pertinent points to ponder and understand too! A utopian dream and assertions of so called liberals is nothing but a psychic state of mind. Something to avoid and wake up to reality as you say!

  2. True Murali! Songs are appealing because they tug at your heart strings( taking your head off), even a little bit of realistic thinking leads to the conclusions you have arrived at.
But then, dreams are also pleasant sometimes…

  3. Aahhh, a certain Mr. Putin has shown his disdain – the issue is now under debate. Is it the encroaching NATO influence only or something more significant. The analysts are still working on the “why” would he take such a step…
